Successfully owning and operating a 125 year old business in three locations is what the Sinclair family takes pride in and works hard at day in and day out. Clark and Connie Sinclair, along with their son Eric, are the fifth generation owners and operators of Montgomery’s Furniture, a family business, which began in 1888 in Alexandria, South Dakota, as a furniture store and funeral parlor.
Since then, numerous changes have been made to the business, but still the foundation it was built on — offering a quality product at a great price, accompanied with superb customer service — has remained the key pillar to success over its 125 years. After its beginnings in Alexandria and then moving to Howard, Montgomery’s Furniture relocated to Madison, SD in 1980, where it is still located today.
In 1986, Clark and Connie Sinclair became owners of Montgomery’s when they purchased the business from Connie’s father. In addition to Madison, Montgomery’s is also located in Sioux Falls, where it has been since 1997. In 2012, the Sinclairs took advantage of a loan package offered by First Bank & Trust in Madison and an SBA 504 loan by First District Development Company (FDDC) to better position the Montgomery’s Furniture stores in Madison and Sioux Falls. In 2013, they expanded their business to Watertown. The Sinclairs utilized this same pairing of commercial funds to assist with the purchase and improvement of real estate in Watertown to open their third Montgomery’s store.
